Goodwin & Company, a tobacco firm, issued this 1887 card, and cards like it were typically packed inside cigarette packages to stiffen them and draw buyers. The title "Gypsy Queens" was devised by Library of Congress staff, so it is a cataloguing label rather than wording printed by the original maker. The albumen print process, which used egg-white-coated paper, was common in the 1880s and gives the image its warm, slightly glossy surface. The card belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, a major group of early baseball cards held by the Library.
