The Buchner Gold Coin card is a tobacco card from 1887, issued by D. Buchner & Company as part of its Gold Coin brand, and it is catalogued as N284 in the standard reference numbering for early American tobacco cards. Like many cards of the period, it was a chromolithograph, a multicolor print made from stone or metal plates, and such cards were tucked into cigarette or tobacco packages as a sales incentive. The Library of Congress's title for it was devised by its staff, and the card belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards, which documents how these small colored pictures became popular collectibles in the 1880s.
