A scythe-and-field metaphor carries the title, casting James A. Garfield as a farmer clearing a path to the presidency. Garfield had worked as a farm laborer and canal boatman in his youth in Ohio, and that background became a campaign theme in 1880. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for topical lithographs, issued many prints that year to appeal to voters. Garfield won the election narrowly and took office in March 1881, but he was shot in July of that year and died in September.
