The title casts Ohio Republican James A. Garfield as a farmer mowing his way to the presidency, a fitting image for a candidate who had grown up on a rural Ohio farm and worked as a canal boatman before entering politics. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive colored lithographs, issued many campaign prints like this one for a mass audience around 1880. Garfield narrowly won that year's election, but he was shot in July 1881 and died in September, so the print now stands as a record of an optimistic campaign moment.
