Rather than the building itself, this picture centers on a household worker: a man identified only as Jerry, holding a feather duster inside the White House. Photographs like this, taken around 1889, record the staff who kept the executive mansion running during the early Benjamin Harrison years, when much domestic work was still done by hand. The image survives as a glass negative, and this print was made from that negative in 1992, so it is a modern reproduction of an 1880s original.
