Few pictures on this board show a newly married couple at the presidential residence, and this one records a stop on the Mountbattens' trip to the United States in the months after their 1922 wedding. Louis Mountbatten was a younger son of a German-born branch of the royal family who had taken the Mountbatten name, and he went on to serve as the last Viceroy of India and later became Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Underwood & Underwood, the commercial studio that produced this print, sold large numbers of news and society photographs of visitors in Washington during the 1920s. The clothing the couple wears is a useful guide to the fashions of that decade.
