Few apple crate labels from the Okanagan Valley carry a brand as distinctive as Penoka, which was packed and shipped from Vernon, British Columbia. Labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in prairie cities and across the country could tell one grower's fruit from another's. In the early twentieth century, the Okanagan's irrigated orchards produced large crops that were sold through cooperative packing houses and shipped by rail, and the colorful lithographed label was a key part of marketing that fruit.
