Ellenville, in Ulster County at the western edge of the Catskills, was a summer destination for New York City families in 1912, and The Wawbeek, a large resort hotel on the lake country outside the village, was one of the places they came to stay. The Ulster and Delaware Railroad brought visitors up from the city and the Hudson Valley, so hotel life depended on the trains as much as on the scenery of the Shawangunk Mountains. Ellenville itself also had working industries beyond tourism, and mining in the surrounding hills drew workers to the area in the early twentieth century. For the people who lived there, the village was known both as a place where guests arrived each summer and as a town that depended on that seasonal trade for much of its income.
