The Battle of New Orleans, fought on January 8, 1815, was the last major engagement of the War of 1812 and made Andrew Jackson a national hero. American forces under Jackson, then a major general, held entrenched positions behind earthworks south of the city and repulsed a British assault that left the attackers with heavy losses. The battle came about two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent had already been signed, though news of the peace had not yet reached the armies. Jackson's victory over veteran British troops did much to shape his later political career.
