The Battle of New Orleans, fought on January 8, 1815, was the last major engagement of the War of 1812, and this engraved view puts Andrew Jackson's name at the center of it. Jackson, then a major general commanding a mixed force of regulars, militia, free Black soldiers, and Louisiana volunteers, held a line of earthworks south of the city and drove back a British assault that cost the attackers heavy losses. The battle came two weeks after a peace treaty had been signed at Ghent, though news travelled slowly and neither side knew it yet. Engravings like this one turned the victory into a national legend and helped launch Jackson's path to the presidency.
