The scene centers on Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch director of New Netherland, at the moment in 1664 when English warships under Richard Nicolls appeared in the harbor and demanded that New Amsterdam surrender. Stuyvesant, with few means to resist, agreed to terms that September, and the town was renamed New York for the Duke of York. J.L.G. Ferris's painting was reproduced here as a color halftone for the Pageant of a Nation series, published in Cleveland in 1932. Because the picture is conjectural rather than drawn from life, it shows as much of the period's taste for dramatic history as it does documented events.
