Few views of Capitol life show senators off the floor, and this one takes the chamber's private dining room as its subject. The refectory, a basement dining room in the U.S. Capitol, is shown with senators and their guests gathered at luncheon. The wood engraving appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in May 1868, when the Senate was sitting as a court for the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. Pictures like this reveal how much of Washington's business was also conducted over meals and conversation.
