The Great Falls of the Yellowstone River sit inside Yellowstone National Park, where the river drops roughly 308 feet over a sheer basalt wall before entering the canyon below. This stereograph, numbered 605 and dated to about 1901, would have been viewed through a stereoscope to give the falls a convincing sense of depth and scale. Stereo cards like this one were a popular way for American households to visit distant landmarks at the turn of the twentieth century, when the park was still relatively new as a federal reserve and rail travel was bringing visitors west in growing numbers.
