The title on this 1936 silkscreen poster announces *A Texas Steer*, a stage comedy by Charles Hale Hoyt (1859-1900), a playwright known for lighthearted satire of American public life. The Federal theater Project, a Works Progress Administration program that put unemployed theater workers back on stage during the Depression, sponsored this production, and its posters were often made in silkscreen by artists in the WPA poster division. The poster's bold flat color and its advertising of a stage comedy in California reflect how the program used graphic design to fill houses and keep its companies working.
