The record dates this parade to September 20, 1892, the day of the 26th annual encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Washington, D.C. The G.A.R., founded in 1866 by Union Civil War veterans, held these encampments as national reunions that drew large crowds to the host city. Photographer George Prince, who worked in Washington, captured the marchers moving along a commercial street, so the picture shows the ceremony and the busy city around it. It is worth noticing how the everyday business of the avenue shares the frame with the veterans' procession.
