Davenport in 1888 was a Mississippi River city whose economy rested on river commerce and the lumber trade, which drew logs downstream and turned them into boards and building stock in mills along the levee. Wholesale houses and railroad yards handled goods moving between the Iowa farm country and eastern markets, and the town kept growing outward from its older core. Residents that year were also following the national contest in which Benjamin Harrison defeated Grover Cleveland, and local newspapers covered it closely. A street-by-street view like this one would have shown many people the blocks where they worked, traded and worshipped.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Davenport, Iowa, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
