Sioux City, Iowa, in 1888 was a river town where the Floyd River meets the Missouri in the state's northwest corner. Railroads of the 1880s linked it to Chicago, St. Paul and Omaha, and stockyards and packing houses on the river bottoms turned cattle and hogs from the surrounding prairie into a major local industry. Steamboats still tied up along the levee to carry freight up and down the Missouri, while city officials and property owners debated streets, water and the homes spreading up the bluffs. Residents of that year would have known the town as a center of livestock, grain and railroad commerce, a place still caught between its river past and its rail and packing future.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Sioux City, Iowa, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
