Sixth Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets, in Midtown Manhattan, is where this view of the Hippodrome stands, and the building was among the largest entertainment venues in the city when this photograph was made around 1910. Thompson and Dundy, the showmen behind Luna Park at Coney Island, opened it in 1905 as a vast house for spectacles, with a stage that could be flooded for water pageants and seating for thousands. The print was made by F.H. Tucker of South Orange, New Jersey, and its copyright deposit suggests it was registered as a published view of the city, a common route for commercial street and theater photographs of the period.
