The only identifier this glass negative carries is the name Culbertson, which the Library of Congress notes was taken from unverified information on the negatives or caption cards, so it may refer to a person, a place or a family. George Grantham Bain started his news photo service in New York in 1899, and its staff produced portraits and news pictures that were sold to newspapers across the country. Glass plates like this were the standard working medium of press photographers in the early twentieth century, and their fine detail is worth a close look.
