The only identifying detail in this record is the title "Thomas," which the Library of Congress lists as unverified and taken from notes on the negative or its caption card, so the subject is uncertain. The negative is a glass plate, a format that was standard for press and studio photography in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency founded in the late 1890s that supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines. The pictures in that collection often show public figures, street scenes and current events, so the glass negative is a useful record of how working news photographers recorded their subjects.
