Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, "Thomas," which the Bain News Service assigned from its own notes and which has not been independently verified. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made and distributed by Bain's New York agency in the early twentieth century. The service supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, public figures and everyday scenes, so many of its negatives were made quickly for prompt publication. Small glass plates like this one were the standard working format of that era, and they often retain a sharpness and tonal range that later film did not always match.
