The only name on this glass negative is "W.A. Harriman," a title taken from Bain News Service data that the Library of Congress notes has not been verified. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs of public figures, performers and events to newspapers in the early decades of the twentieth century, and its negatives were stored in batches like this one. No date is recorded, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain, but the glass format places the picture within that commercial news trade.
