The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, "Young," and the Library of Congress notes that even this comes from unverified data written on the glass or its caption card, so the sitter, place and date remain uncertain. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York around 1900, supplied newspapers with photographs of news events, public figures and city life. Glass negatives of this small size stayed a standard tool for press photographers well into the 1920s, so the plate reflects the working methods of its time as much as its subject.
