Small private garden plots were a familiar part of rural life in many places, with households growing vegetables, fruit and fodder on land set apart from the main fields. Their surplus often reached local markets, giving families cash and food beyond what wages or communal work provided. In the Soviet Union, for example, such personal plots produced a large share of the country's potatoes, vegetables and dairy goods, even though they covered only a small fraction of farmland. The tidy rows and fences in a picture like this show how intensively a limited patch of ground was worked.
