An open-air market with stalls of vendors and piles of produce, set in Russia, makes an unusual subject for a board otherwise filled with barns and farmland. Markets like this one were a central part of rural and town life in Russia, where households often sold surplus vegetables, dairy, eggs and handmade goods directly to buyers. The scene shows how farm output moved from field to customer without a middleman, with trade carried on in the open and the stalls set up beside the goods themselves. Look closely at the crates and sacks, which reveal what was in season and how the sellers displayed their wares.
