A bird's-eye view of Covent Garden market square shows the whole layout at once, with the stalls, carts and surrounding buildings laid out from above. The square dates to the 1630s, when Inigo Jones designed it as one of London's first planned open spaces, and it grew into a produce market that supplied the city with fruit and vegetables for centuries. Engravings like this one are useful for seeing how the market filled the piazza, and how the trade crowded its edges before the wholesale market moved out of the district in 1974.
