Few towns on the North Shore of Lake Michigan planned their commercial centers as carefully as Lake Forest did with its Market Square. Rather than a row of unrelated storefronts, the square was conceived as a unified village-style group of shops, a design meant to suit the town's wealthy residential character. The classic market square, a place where farm families sold produce and goods, gave the district its name and its purpose. Notice how the buildings frame the open space, which shows how early twentieth-century planners borrowed from European village models.
