Paco Market in Manila was one of the city's busiest public markets in the early twentieth century, and a 1911 view of it shows the stalls, carts and crowds that kept the city fed. Built under the American colonial administration, which had taken control of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, these municipal markets were meant to bring order and sanitation to the buying and selling of food. The district of Paco sat south of the old walled city of Intramuros, and its market drew shoppers from surrounding neighborhoods. Look closely at the arrangement of the stalls and the people moving between them to see how commerce was organized in the period.
