This 1917 poster promotes a week devoted to Charente-Inférieure, the Atlantic department of western France, and it was signed by the illustrator Adolphe Willette with the slogan "Vive la nation!" Willette was a Montmartre artist known for caricature and sentimental drawing, and his wartime work carried that same emotional directness. The figure of Marianne, the symbol of the French republic, appears alongside drums, a rallying image common in home-front appeals. Departmental "weeks" like this one were local campaigns, usually encouraging residents to buy war loans to fund the war effort.
