The title names German caddies, though that label is unverified and comes from data on the Bain News Service negatives or caption cards. Caddies, most often golf attendants, carried players' clubs around the course, a job frequently given to boys and young men in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold its pictures to newspapers, so this glass negative reflects the wire service's interest in everyday work and leisure. Without a firm date, the scene and its details are best read as a snapshot of that era.
