Ivan Mamutoff is the name given to this glass negative, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified caption data kept by the Bain News Service. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York in the early 1900s, and it supplied newspapers with photographs of current events, public figures, and everyday life until the 1920s. Its glass negatives, many of them 5 by 7 inches or smaller, capture the fast-moving news work of that period. Because the date and subject are not confirmed in the record, the sitter's identity and the occasion behind the picture remain open questions for researchers.
