The wheat field south of Gettysburg, where this card places its subject, was among the most fiercely contested ground of the battle, and on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, it changed hands several times as Union and Confederate units fought over it. Stereographs like this one were made by photographers who reached the field in the days and weeks after the fighting, and the dead in the view show the ground before burial details had cleared it. Stereo cards were sold to a public eager for images of the war, so viewers were meant to see the scene in three dimensions and reckon with its cost. The caption data on this record is unverified, so the exact date and photographer should be checked against other sources.
