Audubon is an unexpected subject for a Japanese woodblock print, and this sheet shows John James Audubon (1785–1851), the American painter and naturalist whose life-size studies of North American birds made up *The Birds of America*. The print is a color woodcut on hōsho paper, and the Library of Congress cites a reference on Yokohama prints for it, a genre of foreign-themed images that flourished after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859. The record gives 1850, which may be an estimate, since that genre developed later. The credited artists, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Kuniaki and Utagawa Toyokuni III, were all prominent members of the Utagawa school.
