The Rotunda at the University of Virginia, which Thomas Jefferson designed and founded in 1819, is the setting here, and the 1911 date places the view in the early twentieth century, decades after the campus opened its doors. Jefferson drew the plans himself, arranging the lawns, pavilions and colonnades around a domed library modeled on the Pantheon in Rome. Because the grounds have changed little in their basic layout, the image makes a useful comparison with how the campus looked when Jefferson was still alive and closely involved in its design.
