Umbrellas shade the tables of an open-air restaurant on the boardwalk at Jones Beach, on Long Island, in this 1931 view. The state park had opened only two years earlier, in 1929, as part of a large public works program led by Robert Moses, and it was built to bring crowds from New York City to the ocean by automobile. The scene shows a seaside outing that was within reach of ordinary families even in the first years of the Great Depression.
