Gettysburg is a small Pennsylvania town where roads from several directions met, and on the first day of July 1863 Union and Confederate forces collided in its fields and streets. The battle that followed ran for three days and is widely regarded as the turning point of the American Civil War in the East, after which Lee's army withdrew south and did not mount another invasion of the North. The fighting on this opening day began with Union cavalry holding the ridges west of town until infantry arrived, and the ground around the town still carries the monuments and markers that trace those early movements.
