The building is the Lutheran Theological Seminary on Seminary Ridge, on high ground just west of Gettysburg's town center. Its cupola offered a wide view of the surrounding fields, and on July 1, 1863, the first day of the battle, it served as an observation point, which put the seminary at the center of the fighting that followed. The picture is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives exposed side by side so that the pair, viewed through a stereoscope, appears as a single image with depth. The record notes that the photograph was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, who photographed the battlefield in 1863.
