This triptych centers on a balloon ascension, with carriages and a crowd of spectators gathered below the rising balloon. The sheets are signed by Yoshitora, a prolific Japanese printmaker of the 1860s who drew many Western-themed scenes as Japanese audiences grew curious about foreign people and technology after the ports opened in the 1850s. The engraving is attributed to Hori Mino, and the series title, Images of the Western World, places the scene among the foreign subjects artists explored in those years. Balloon flights drew large crowds in American cities during the Civil War era, so the print offers a view of an American public event as seen through Japanese eyes.
