Kew Gardens, in the borough of Queens, was a residential neighborhood in 1936 that had grown up over the previous quarter century around the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line. Its developers named the district after the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in England and marketed it as a garden community of houses for commuters working in Manhattan. The Depression had slowed building across the city, so shops along Lefferts Boulevard and Queens Boulevard served a community that depended on trains and streetcars for daily travel. Queens had joined New York City in 1898, and by the mid-1930s residents were watching the borough's suburban character change as new roads and apartment buildings arrived.
