Russell B. Long, the Louisiana Democrat who served in the United States Senate from 1948 to 1987, is the subject of this 1964 portrait, one of the many studio and press images of senators held in the Library of Congress. Long was the son of Huey P. Long, the populist governor and senator, and by the 1960s he had become a powerful figure in his own right, eventually chairing the Senate Finance Committee. The print is catalogued within the James G. Goode Collection and carries the "Autographs" heading, a reminder that many portraits of this era were gathered alongside signed material from public figures.
