Otto Hess, a pitcher, is pictured here in a Boston Nationals uniform, the National League club that was also called the Braves at the time. Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold photographs to newspapers, made this glass negative. The date of about 1913 comes from a 2006 study by the Society for American Baseball Research, not from the original caption, so it is a research-based estimate. Small negatives like this were everyday tools of newspaper photography, when a player's portrait could appear alongside the day's game story.
