The title on the negative sleeve names an Academy of Sciences, but the record does not say which institution it shows, so the subject is best understood as one of the scientific institutions that drew civic photographers in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, active mainly in Washington, D.C., from about 1906 to 1936, produced a large body of glass negatives of public buildings, streets and events, and this plate belongs to that output. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from the slow deterioration of its original coating, a common condition for negatives of this age that affects how much tonal detail survives.
