This 1919 lithograph is unusual among recruiting posters because its pitch centers on animals rather than soldiers. Issued by the Medical Department as Recruiting Poster No. 2, dated July 14, 1919, it advertises training for the Veterinary Corps of the U.S. Army, with courses ranging from horseshoeing and riding to meat and dairy inspection. The list shows how much of the peacetime Army still depended on horses and the specialists who kept them fit. Its appeal to practical trades likely spoke to young men leaving wartime service and looking for steady work.
