Few posters of the period pair a recruiting-style message with United Nations flags, and W.E. Duke's chromolithograph does so in its depiction of service in the Persian Gulf. Operation Desert Shield began in August 1990, when Iraq's invasion of Kuwait drew a U.S.-led coalition to Saudi Arabia, and Operation Desert Storm followed in January 1991 before a ceasefire took hold that February. Military vehicles and the coalition flags in the design reflect the multinational character of that effort. The record lists the work as a 1991 promotional print, and its subject headings point to the veterans of the campaign.
