Rather than the finished monument, this engraving shows the statue in its working state: a trial assembly of copper sections inside the Paris workshops of Gaget, Gauthier et Cie, the firm that shaped Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's design into sheets. It ran in *La Génie Civil* on August 1, 1883, while the work was still underway and the pieces were being fitted to check their joins before the statue was taken apart for shipment to New York. Alex. Fatalot's drawing is useful for seeing how the copper skin was carried on the iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm.
