New York International Airport, the name then used for what is now John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, is the setting for this 1951 view of a steady stream of travelers moving through its terminal. The record notes that roughly 15,000 people a week arrived and departed for foreign countries at the field, a figure that shows how quickly transatlantic flight was growing after the Second World War. Photographed by the Wide World agency, the picture captures the crowded, busy character of postwar air travel, when flying overseas was still a novelty for most Americans and airports were becoming major public gateways.
