Rather than an image of the city, this item is the second title page of *Ragged Dick*, the 1868 Boston edition issued by Loring, and it carries no illustrations. The novel grew out of stories Horatio Alger Jr. had written for magazines aimed at young readers, and it follows Dick Hunter, a bootblack working the streets of New York. Boston was a major center of publishing for juvenile fiction in the late 1860s, and the book's popularity helped establish Alger's formula of a poor boy rising through honesty and hard work. The record notes a possible reference copy elsewhere in the collection, so the title page may be best read alongside the text it introduces.
