Unlike many views of the city, this one was made to open a book: it is the frontispiece to *The Mer-King*, set opposite the title page of an 1857 volume. Boston was then one of the busiest publishing centers in the country, and publishers often placed an illustration facing the title page to draw readers in before the first chapter. The pairing of picture and title was meant to be read together as a single introduction to the book.
