Few vessels were as central to early travel in Yellowstone as the steamer Zillah, shown here at the Thumb, a sheltered bay on the West Thumb arm of Yellowstone Lake. Before automobiles and paved roads, visitors reached the lake's shores by stagecoach and then crossed the water by steamboat, which made the journey between the lake hotels and the geyser basins far shorter than an overland trip. Landings like this one were rough, practical places where supplies, mail, and passengers were moved onto shore, and the picture offers a useful look at the work that supported tourism in the park's early decades.
