Wartime stationery often borrowed patriotic names, and this label sold a letter paper under the title "American Congress." Hollister, Taylor & Co., a stationery firm in Springfield, Massachusetts, issued it around 1864, and F. Bolles engraved the color print from a design by M. Bradley. Labels like this were pasted onto boxes of writing paper to catch a buyer's eye, so the picture was meant to sell the product as much as decorate it. The name alone ties the paper to the national capital and shows how patriotic branding ran through everyday commerce during the Civil War.
